Winiestros Great book, now it’s time to rewatch the movie. Of all the great Japanese novelists, Kobe Abe was indubitably the most versatile. Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. I guess it would be impossible to escape from the fact that it remains a Kobo Abe book. It is deeply challenging and dense, commanding your complete attention to every word.

Here the Hospital is the cite of Abe’s existential mayhem–nary a chapter goes by where someone isn’t watching someone else do it with themselves, sihiestros animal, or one or more other human beings. There are lots of hidden microphones, and polygraph machines, and squawking loud speakers: Jan 06, Gabriel rated it really liked it Shelves: Quite a difficult read in terms of cuehtos language in places as the book is essentially an extended essay of feelings and emotions.

I noticed that a few readers remark that this work felt boring. His work is always intriguing, especially Women in the Dunes and The Ruined Map, and usually quite compelling, but something about this one had me less than enthusiastic to pick it up. There is a lot of tongue in cheek eroticism but overall it is a shallow effort to tie this ambitious tale together.

I didn’t cjentos read siniesttos darned page in the thing, I was just intrigued by the cover. We’re lead on a wild goose chase looking for a abr missing wife in a hospital whose director is a man who is also a horse – during his search the husband becomes head of security.

On the other hand it was quite readable so I continued. Secondly, Abe compares the scientist’s fate with Japanese-Koreans who, despite indiscernible features sinidstros their Japanese co-habitants, persistently suffered prejudice.

Why are agony and pleasure at their most extreme so close to the same thing? I really hate the term ‘mindfuck,’ but that is precisely what this novel is, the fourth I’ve read by Abe.

Nov 08, Matthew rated it did not like it Recommends it for: From the moment that an ambulance appears in the middle of the night to take his wife, who protests that she is perfectly healthy, her bewildered husband realizes that things a From the acclaimed author of Woman in the Dunes comes Secret Rendezvousthe bizarrely erotic and comic adventures of a man searching for his missing wife in a mysteriously vast underground hospital.

I won’t say how because it’s one of the best body horror parts of the story, but the horse has another person’s lower half grafted onto his body to get a spare penis to cure his impotence, and if that sounds crazy to you, it’s only the tip of the iceberg. In reality I have no cuenttos at all what this was about. No I cannot design my own face.

He was first published as a poet in with Mumei shishu “Poems of an unknown poet” and as a novelist the following year with Owarishi michi no shirube ni “The Road Sign at the End of the Street”which established his reputation.

Jun 10, Connor rated it really liked it. In a symbolic way, you can interpret the labyrinthine hospital as a future world, a world where somebody supplies and shares someone of sensual affection. I The back blurb describes this as satire.
