Hemendra Kumar Roy was a prominent figure in the domain of Bengali young-adult literature. When I was a kid, I used to be fascinated by his works.
Alas, I am not a kid anymore. That feeling of wide-eyed awe is gone, as my exposure to works somogdo other authors has increased. Kishor Bhoutik Samagra contains five novellas and twenty-nine short stories, all belonging to the genres horror and supernatural.

In some of these the author goes over-the-top in terms of description using heavy-handed, forcefully poetic language. But the stories in which he manages to stay away from this trap, and narrates in simple easy-flowing language, sometimes mixed with a tinge of humour, are absolutely treats for the reader.
Roy was a master of creating an ambiance of suspense and fear of the unknown.
Some of the stories have dubious endings; they have a possible logical explanation apart from the obvious supernatural one. I particularly liked these stories, where the author leaves the reader to choose the explanation.
The most disappointing feature of the book is that the stories which are inspired from works of other authors mainly westerndo not contain citation. I don’t know whether this is a slip on part of the author or the publisher, since this collection was published posthumously.
